Precision Pruning: A300 Standards, BMPs, and Tree Architecture for Effective Specifications
Our first workshop on Precision Pruning is scheduled for Monday, May 19th at The Tree Place in Fort Worth, TX. We are excited to be hosting this event in partnership with Levi’s Leaf Nursery

8:00 – 9:00 AM – Introduction to ANSI A300 (2023) Pruning Standards
- Understanding the latest updates in ANSI A300 pruning standards
- Defining pruning objectives and their importance in tree health and risk management
- Overview of pruning systems which defines the long term form of the plant
- Importance of consistent pruning terminology for clear communication in specifications
9:00 – 10:00 AM – Pruning Systems, Objectives, Cuts, and Practices
- In-depth exploration of different pruning systems and when to apply them
- Types of pruning cuts: reduction, removal, heading
- The science behind pruning and how it influences tree response and architecture
- Recognizing and managing pruning limitations based on tree condition and species
10:00 – 11:00 AM – Writing Effective Pruning Specifications
- Crafting clear and precise pruning specifications using A300 guidelines
- Defining limitations, exclusions, terms and conditions
- Real-world examples of well-written specifications
- Group exercise: Reviewing and improving pruning specifications
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Field Application: Structural Pruning & Tree Architecture
- Site visit to The Tree Place’s container tree stock
- Identifying conditions of concern in young trees and making pruning decisions
- Practical application of structural pruning techniques
- Observing tree architecture and growth patterns to inform pruning strategies
12:00 – 1:00 PM – Lunch Break (Networking & Discussion)

Michael is a graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. He received his B.S in Recreation Administration in 2005 and went to work for the City of Grand Prairie, Texas right after graduation. Michael serves as Secretary of TBUFC and provides technical support for the organization.
